Jamie Redknapp claimed on Sky Sports on transfer deadline day that Arsenal new boy Ben White is going to be a fantastic player, but it won’t happen overnight.

The Gunners splashed an eye-watering £50 million to sign the Englishman from Brighton and Hove Albion (BBC). White became our third most expensive signing of all time and is our costliest defender ever.

The pressure is on him to deliver but Arsenal’s terrible start to the season has only made things worse. Redknapp is certain that White will be a great player, but he believes that the Gunners’ current position will delay that process by a little while.

The lowdown on Scotland's THREE men hunting first caps

Redknapp: Ben White will be a fantastic player for Arsenal

He said on Sky Sports News on transfer deadline day (03:25 pm): “He can’t save Arsenal on his own, and Arsenal fans need to have patience with this guy.

He’s not necessarily a leading centre-back, he plays alongside someone who will go and head the ball and he’ll sweep up alongside him. Be patient with him, he’s going to be fantastic.

“The pressure at Arsenal is huge right now, and he’s one for the long-term, because the pressure at Arsenal is huge right now.”

The Insider’s View:

White has only made three appearances for Arsenal – two of those came in pre-season. His competitive debut came against Brentford on the opening day of the new Premier League season, and sadly, it wasn’t one to remember.

White soon tested positive for the infamous virus and has since been sidelined. He will return to action after the international break, and Arsenal fans will then get to see what he’s all about. However, we shouldn’t put a lot of pressure on him.

The £50 million price tag makes everyone forget that White is still a 23-year-old who has had just one year’s experience in the Premier League. He may not show his best version for us this season, but based on what we’ve seen of him, we’re certain he’ll be a fantastic player for us in the long run.
