Journalist Dean Jones spoke on The Football Terrace about rumours from the past eight months linking Brighton star Yves Bissouma with a move to Arsenal in this summer’s transfer window.

It is no secret at all at this point that Mikel Arteta and Edu are looking for a new central midfielder. Granit Xhaka is expected to leave soon and the Swiss international will have to be replaced by someone much better than him.

The likes of Ruben Neves, Manuel Locatelli, Eduardo Camavinga and most recently Teun Koopmeiners have all been linked. However, the rumours about Bissouma have been going on for a long time now, and he is many Arsenal fans’ preferred option.

Arsenal, however, have apparently ended their interest in the Mali international now. Jones has revealed that the Gunners are focusing their attention elsewhere, which really is a shame as Bissouma would be perfect for us.

Dean Jones: Yves Bissouma to Arsenal will not happen

Jones said: “Someone I spoke to a couple of days ago and I said: ‘Where are we at with Arsenal?’

“Most of the focus was spoken on Aaron Ramsdale. How they were trying to get that done. What their limitations were on it. The midfield is a big situation really. I think Bissouma is out of the window now. That one’s not going to happen.”

The Insider’s View:

Arsenal have to bring in a new central midfielder this summer, there’s no doubt about that whatsoever. The likes of Neves, Camavinga and Koopmeiners are all brilliant options, but Bissouma is arguably the best.

The Gunners need someone dynamic in the middle of the park. We need to evolve from Xhaka to someone better, not bring in a like-for-like replacement. Bissouma, labelled as ‘exceptional‘ by Gary Lineker, would’ve been perfect, but it doesn’t look like he’s on the wish list anymore.

That really is a shame, but with Arsenal, it’s never over until it’s actually over. If Edu can’t bring in someone like Locatelli or Neves, who seem to be his top targets, we could well go back in for Bissouma, and that would be absolutely brilliant for us ahead of the new season.
