Arsenal Invincible did something Arsene Wenger ‘didn’t like’ after winning the league at White Hart Lane

If winning the Premier League against Tottenham wasn’t good enough for Arsenal fans, Arsene Wenger’s side ended the season unbeaten.

Arsenal won the league with four games to go in 2003/04, clinching the trophy at White Hart Lane.

It’s rather comical that the Gunners have won the league at White Hart Lane the same number of times that Spurs have won the league, which is twice, for those who weren’t aware.

With hindsight, winning the league at the ground of their rivals was merely the icing on the cake for Arsenal, who ended the campaign with no defeats.

Wenger’s Invincible squad have been immortalised in Premier League history as, year upon year, the unbeaten feat looks harder and harder to achieve.

Arsene Wenger didn’t like Kolo Toure’s celebration at White Hart Lane

It’s difficult to imagine how the players were feeling on that afternoon at the Lane, understanding that Arsenal needed just one point to win the league.

In a fiercely competitive fixture, as it always is in the North London Derby, Arsenal drew 2-2 with Spurs, dropping points but still doing enough to be crowned champions in N17.

Fans celebrated in the away end of White Hart Lane for hours after the draw, as did the players, with one member of the squad remembering every part of the post-match joy.

Reflecting on the memorable afternoon in North London, Invincibles centre-back Kolo Toure set the scene of the celebrations when speaking to Arsenal’s official website

“What a special day! It was incredible, one of my best memories in my career.

“Coming from Ivory Coast to Arsenal – people back home couldn’t believe it. But I played, and I shocked everybody, and then I won the title too.”

Toure, who was a character in the dressing room, then admitted that he did something Wenger was very much against during his celebrations at White Hart Lane.

“What a precious time. I did a backflip on the pitch – I did everything!

“Arsene didn’t like me doing those backflips. He said they were dangerous, so it was only for very special occasions!”

Even Wenger might’ve given Toure a pass on that day, as occasions don’t get more special than winning the league at the home of your bitter rivals.

Thierry Henry’s legendary recap of winning the league at White Hart Lane

Toure will remember the day forever, not only because of his free pass to do a backflip.

It was a monumental feat for the Arsenal squad, but the celebrations weren’t supposed to happen.

That was the account of Thierry Henry, who, when reminiscing on the day, recalled being told not to celebrate.

“We were asked: ‘Please, if you win the league, do not celebrate there.’ And, to be fair, everybody said, ‘Okay, we understand, that’s going to create chaos.’”

Henry understood, but something changed his and the Arsenal players’ minds, prompting them to celebrate with the away end.

“I remember Mauricio Taricco jumping around, and he got a cramp from it. He was jumping around and celebrating a draw – that’s their standard.

“I looked at him and said: ‘Are you kidding me?’ He was going ‘yeaahhh’ jumping in front of me.

“I said: ‘Do you realise that we needed a point to be champions at your place?’ He was talking, and I told him to watch me after the game.”

Henry led the celebrations over to the away end at White Hart Lane, known as the champions’ corner, thanks to that memorable day.
