What Tottenham fans once said about Arsenal’s David Raya is now so funny as they could get relegated

Tottenham Hotspur fans usually have a lot to say about Arsenal, but they have all gone very quiet lately.

The Gunners, unsurprisingly, won both North London Derbies this season, and their status as the best club in the capital city remains intact.

Spurs have been so poor this season. They are currently 16th in the Premier League table, just a point above the bottom three, and relegation looks like a very real possibility.

That made us think about some of the things Tottenham fans have said over the years, and their comments on David Raya when Arsenal signed him will definitely make you laugh.

If Tottenham get relegated, who will Arsenal’s biggest rivals be next season?

What Tottenham fans said about David Raya when he joined Arsenal in 2023

Tottenham were very keen to sign Raya in 2023 before Arsenal even came into the picture. The Spaniard had even agreed personal terms to join them.

Spurs, however, refused to meet Brentford’s asking price for the goalkeeper and ended up signing Guglielmo Vicario for a cheaper fee instead.

Tottenham supporters got a bit too excited with the Italian early on, so much so that they started posting on social media that he was superior to Raya.

Those tweets are hilarious to read now as Mikel Arteta’s goalkeeper is on his way to winning the Premier League and the Golden Glove, while Vicario is on the verge of relegation with Tottenham.

One Tottenham fan said in 2023: “Can’t be the only one who’s so happy that we signed Vicario over Raya? Younger, cheaper, and most importantly, better.”

Another wrote: “Raya is so bad it’s unbelievable. Vicario is by far the better keeper, getting him instead of Raya has to be one of the best decisions we ever made.”

“Not only is Vicario better than Raya in terms of shot-stopping, but he also proved that he’s better with the ball at his feet. Raya is erratic and very wasteful with the ball; Vicario is composed and precise with both feet. We dodged a bullet there,” said another.

Another Spurs supporter tweeted: “Signing Vicario over Raya might have been one of the best decisions this club has made in a LONG time.”

“Vicario > Raya… common knowledge now,” posted another.

Is David Raya the best goalkeeper in the world? If not, who is?

Tottenham fans got it all wrong at the time, and the stats prove it.

Since joining Arsenal, Raya has played 133 games for Arsenal, conceded 105 goals, and kept 58 clean sheets in all competitions. He averages 0.78 goals conceded per game.

Vicario, on the other hand, has played 113 games for Tottenham, conceded 162 goals, and kept just 29 clean sheets. He averages 1.43 goals conceded per game.

Raya is twice the goalkeeper Vicario is, and Spurs fans should be embarrassed for thinking otherwise.
