Viktor Gyokeres is set to become Andrea Berta’s sixth signing at Arsenal, joining from Sporting CP for a fee worth in the region of £63 million.

Berta has already added Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera to Mikel Arteta’s ranks this summer.

Gyokeres will become the latest Arsenal acquisition under the Italian’s stewardship, with the Swede set to undergo his medical in London on Saturday.

The 27-year-old will then fly to Singapore to join up with his new teammates for pre-season.

The breakdown of Viktor Gyokeres’ add-ons has been revealed

Arsenal will pay Sporting €63 million (£55 million) up front for Gyokeres, with €10 million (£8 million) in add-ons on top of that.

Various reports suggested that the nature of the performance-related add-ons was what resulted in the deal stalling.

Sporting wanted more guaranteed permutations, while Arsenal were looking for the add-ons to be based on more ambitious objectives.

Eventually, a compromise was reached, and the breakdown of the additional fees has now been revealed.

According to Ben Jacobs, Arsenal will pay Sporting €1.25 million for every 20 appearances Gyokeres makes, with these only registering if he plays over 45 minutes in each of these matches.

However, this will stop once the Gunners have paid €5 million, essentially meaning half of the add-ons will be paid if Gyokeres plays 80 matches.

The North Londoners will also pay €500,000 for every 20-goal contributions that the striker produces, up to a total of €1 million.

The final €4 million will be made up from every time Arsenal qualify for the Champions League League phase with Gyokeres in the team, in €1 million instalments for every qualification.

Andrea Berta’s negotiations for Viktor Gyokeres have paid off

Ultimately, Berta’s relentless haggling over the minor details in the add-ons has paid off.

The sporting director has obtained an exceptional deal for Europe’s most prolific striker in the 2024/25 season, with achievable add-ons, which will only be paid if Gyokeres provides value.

If he plays regularly and scores goals, Arsenal will pay more money, but this will be a justified outlay for a player contributing to the success of the team.

Meanwhile, the Champions League qualification money will be offset by the huge income Arsenal will receive from qualifying for the competition regardless.

Berta has demonstrated his credentials this summer with some shrewd business, and this work for the Gyokeres deal is merely another example of this.
