Arsenal have escaped breaching the Premier League’s FFP rules for now but are still awaiting a verdict from UEFA which may jeopardise any transfer for Kylian Mbappe.
The Premier League confirmed that it charged Everton and Nottingham Forest with breaking its profit and sustainability rules on Monday. It is also the second season in succession that it has charged the Toffees for breaking its rules. Both clubs also confirmed they are in breach.
English top-flight clubs are allowed to record losses up to £105m in a three-year accounting period. But Everton received an instant 10-point deduction in November after making losses of £124.5m to the end of the 2021/22 term. They might now face another points deduction.

Arsenal await UEFA’s FFP verdict after escaping a Premier League penalty
Monday’s announcement by the Premier League brought Arsenal some comfort by avoiding an FFP breach. The Gunners faced an anxious wait after having to sign David Raya on loan in August to avoid overspending. They paid Brentford £3m and obtained a £27m option to buy.
Arsenal had already broken their transfer record to sign Declan Rice last summer, along with deals for Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz. The big-spending summer also followed spends of £145m in 2021 and £165m in 2022. The Athletic noted those led to pre-tax losses of £226m.
Yet Rice, Havertz, Timber and Raya’s arrivals will only reflect in Arsenal’s next set of accounts up to 2023/24, though. So, their chances of signing Mbappe if or when he leaves Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent this summer remain questionable, especially with UEFA’s FFP rules.
Unlike the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, UEFA’s rules on FFP limit losses to £78m over three years. UEFA also restricts the total outlay clubs can spend on transfers and wages to 90% of their overall income. That figure will also drop to 70% by the 2025/26 term.
Real Madrid president Perez questioned on Mbappe’s transfer from PSG
So, not only are Arsenal having to work with a strict budget this January, but their FFP status could limit this summer’s activity when a free transfer for Mbappe may be available. The 25-year-old is still yet to commit to a new contract for Paris Saint-Germain to stay beyond June.

Journalist Sam Dean has suggested that Arsenal are likely to be among the European teams that appeal to Mbappe should he leave PSG. But The Telegraph reports that the France hero would expect a salary of €75m (£64.5m) a year after tax. It would work out at £1.2m a week.
Mbappe will also expect a significant signing-on bonus given Paris Saint-Germain would not be owed a transfer fee. So, any ‘free’ transfer to Arsenal remains highly improbable, despite the team escaping a breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules this week.
Even Real Madrid president Florentino Perez now refusing to discuss the Galacticos’ interest in Mbappe’s transfer will do little to encourage Arsenal. Teams outside of France can already negotiate a Bosman move with the Paris-born dynamo ahead of his contract at PSG expiring.
“It’s really not the day to talk about this,” Perez said after Real Madrid beat Barcelona 4-1 in the Spanish Super Cup last Sunday, via quotes by Marca. “It’s the day to congratulate the players we have, not those other teams have.”
