Arsenal ‘contact’ Barcelona star over surprise free transfer – one thing could stop the deal

The January transfer window is just around the corner and for Arsenal, it represents a chance to improve their squad.

There are a few areas for Mikel Arteta to consider making a few changes, should some opportunities become available.

Bukayo Saka’s injury could prompt the hierarchy to make some big moves to help replace the quality lost in the final months of the season.

Meanwhile, another centre-forward is on the radar along with any options that could help support the midfield.

Arsenal are only likely to make moves this winter if there are surprising opportunities, given how tough the market is to work in.

One chance may have arrived out of nowhere for the side though.

Arsenal make contact over Dani Olmo transfer

One transfer opportunity that could appear this winter surrounds the future of Barcelona playmaker Dani Olmo.

Due to the Blaugrana’s financial concerns, the Spain international may not be available for registration unless other sales are made.

If he can’t be registered, Olmo could leave Barcelona for free, coming as a surprise option for a few clubs.

That offers a chance for Arsenal to strengthen, with reports from Sky Sports claiming that Arsenal have been in ‘positive contacts’ with the player’s representatives.

Manchester City are doing the same though, with a view of changing their squad around to challenge once again.

The report claims that uncertainty surrounding the situation of the sporting director at the Emirates Stadium makes it hard to convince Olmo to join.

It also states that Mikel Arteta himself would have to drive through a move to convince the Barcelona star to switch.

Dani Olmo transfer could help with Bukayo Saka injury

While Olmo is largely viewed as an attacking midfield option, he can play in a variety of positions that could help Arsenal.

The 26-year-old is right-footed but can play on the left and the right wing too, offering plenty of versatility.

If he is to be deployed on the left, it could allow for Gabriel Martinelli or Ethan Nwaneri to play on the right to replace the injured Saka.

Meanwhile, a move to the right could fill that position outright, which would answer plenty of questions about the team selection in weeks to come.

It remains to be seen if Olmo will make the switch, but it’s a possible free transfer that adds a lot more quality in depth.
