Arsenal are keen on a midfielder in the January transfer window amidst Thomas Partey’s injury struggles, but they may have to wait until the summer for one of their targets.

The Gunners have been linked with Belgian sensation Arthur Vermeeren in recent weeks, but the teenager, who has also been linked with Barcelona, may not leave in the January window.

The 18-year-old Royal Antwerp star, who has been likened to Andres Iniesta, was named as a possible target for Arsenal in January, with Mikel Arteta keen on strengthening his options in midfield, but he may be frustrated in his attempts to sign him.

Arsenal may face Arthur Vermeeren disappointment

A report from TEAMtalk has now claimed that with Arsenal keen on a midfielder, they have a number of targets but Vermeeren may not be one they can easily land in January.

“The Gunners are also looking at Belgian teen sensation Arthur Vermeeren and will continue to track him in this international break as he has been included in the national squad for games against Serbia and Azerbaijan,” the report stated.

“Vermeeren continues to be a player of interest and his European experience gives him a different edge to the Brazilians, though the Royal Antwerp youngster might be harder to sign in the January window.”

Arsenal have been linked with Andre of Fluminense, as well as a more experienced option in Martin Zubimendi.

It is clear that Arteta is keen on adding another defensive midfielder to the squad amidst Partey’s fitness issues and reported desire to leave.

Despite signing Declan Rice and Jorginho within the last two transfer windows, a young defensive midfielder who can cover for and play alongside the pair is seemingly a priority, but Vermeeren may be a more attacking option.

Vermeeren is an interesting profile, but may not be a priority for Arsenal anyway, and if he continues to perform throughout the season, then they could look to sign him in the summer.
