The Gunners have been linked with a move for the Belgium international for a few months now. Mikel Arteta is keen to bolster his midfield before the window shuts, and a top-quality box-to-box midfielder is said to be on the wish list.
Tielemans certainly checks that box, and if reports are to be believed, he’d pick Arsenal over any other club in the Premier League if we make him an offer this summer. However, Edu may have a slightly different plan now.
Arsenal could now make sudden change in Youri Tielemans transfer plan
Tielemans has entered the final year of his contract at Leicester. That’s the reason why many feel he’ll be available for a bargain in this window, but the Foxes are adamant that they want a fee in the region of £32 million for their star midfielder.
That doesn’t really seem like a lot of money for a player of Tielemans’ age, quality and experience, but the fact that he has less than 11 months left on his contract makes Leicester’s demands a bit too high.
The report claims that Arsenal feel the Foxes’ valuation of Tielemans is over the top and are not willing to meet those demands in this summer’s window.
Instead, Edu is now willing to wait until next summer to sign him on a free transfer.
The Insider’s View:
This really is a tricky decision, isn’t it?
Tielemans really is a fantastic player, and he would be perfect for us. As a pure box-to-box midfielder, he is an upgrade over Granit Xhaka, and he really would take us to a whole new level.
However, if Leicester don’t budge on their demands, it probably does make sense to wait for a year and take him off their hands for absolutely nothing.
It will be interesting to see how this pans out in the coming weeks, but whether it’s this summer or the next, Tielemans would be a great signing for us.
