Arsenal January transfer priority named as title rivals now tipped to win Martin Zubimendi race

Mikel Arteta will need to bolster his squad in the January transfer window if Arsenal are to mount a serious Premier League title challenge this season.

The Gunners are already dangerously off the pace as far as the Premier League title race is concerned, and a lack of goals has been a huge issue for the North London club.

Kai Havertz is the first choice to lead the line at the Emirates Stadium, but for all of his qualities the German is not the most prolific of forwards.

Meanwhile, Arsenal must now give up on Gabriel Jesus, as he has been unable to produce the standard required for too long.

Arsenal urged to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal have been told to sign a striker this winter.

Journalist Mark Ogden agrees that this must be the Gunners’ course of action.

Speaking on ESPN, he said: “Arsenal’s need for a centre-forward is so obvious. Kai Havertz has done a decent job scoring the goals, but they can’t keep relying on him, it’s too big a burden for him to carry.

“[Gyokeres] is Arsenal’s absolute priority, because they’ve got goalscorers in the team but they haven’t got an out-and-out goalscorer. That’s why they’re nine points off the top.”

Viktor Gyokeres would represent an extremely exciting addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad. The Sporting CP star is one of the most prolific goalscorers in European football and has all the attributes required to thrive in the Premier League.

However, Manchester United have an edge over Arsenal in the race for Gyokeres, which could prevent the Gunners from striking a deal for his services for this winter.

Mikel Arteta set to miss out on Martin Zubimendi

Not only only do Arsenal look set to miss out on Gyokeres, but they are also unlikely to sign Martin Zubimendi

Ogden revealed that Liverpool and Manchester City are willing to go toe-to-toe to sign the Spanish midfielder, with the Gunners out of the picture.

Arsenal have been linked with Zubimendi for some time.

However, bolstering the midfield is not a priority for the club at this stage, especially since Mikel Merino’s summer arrival from Real Sociedad, where he was a teammate of Zubimendi’s.
