Edu Gaspar has done a lot of good work at Arsenal over the years, but one of his decisions could backfire.
The Brazilian has been in the job since 2019. He has been involved in some exceptional transfers and deserves a lot of praise for the work he has done.
Edu also overcame Arsenal’s struggles with sales this summer. He secured good deals for Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe and Aaron Ramsdale, who joined Crystal Palace, Fulham and Southampton respectively.
However, there is one deal Edu sanctioned that he could well end up regretting.
Arsenal loanee Nuno Tavares’ transfer value has quadrupled
Nuno Tavares has been on Arsenal’s books since the summer of 2021.
The Portuguese left-back joined the Gunners from Benfica. Arsenal paid just £7 million for Tavares at the time, which was viewed as a bargain.
However, the 24-year-old struggled in the second half of his debut season at the Emirates and then had two difficult loan spells at Marseille and Nottingham Forest.
In July, Arsenal agreed to loan Tavares out again, this time to Lazio. Edu negotiated a deal that obligates the Serie A side to make that move permanent in the summer of 2025.
TMW reveal now that Lazio will be able to sign Tavares for just €5 million (£4.1m). That is a no-brainer for Marco Baroni’s side.
Tavares is flying in the Serie A, picking up five assists in five games so far. He has been incredible and his transfer value has shot up.
The report claims that Tavares is already worth four times the amount Lazio will be able to sign him for in 2025, which means he’s now worth €20 million (£16.6m). That is a huge increase in just three months.
Lazio can just sign him for cheap and sell him immediately for a huge profit if they want next season. That would be good business on their part, but we’re sure there will be some regret at Arsenal if that happens.

Edu has included another clause in Tavares’ Lazio deal
Arsenal had to move Tavares on and the best option for all parties was to agree to the deal that Edu did with Lazio back in July.
The defender’s rise in transfer value is annoying now – the Gunners will definitely be wishing that he was worth this much during the summer window.
However, the one saving grace for Arsenal is that Edu has included a sell-on clause in Tavares’ deal with Lazio.
The exact percentage is unclear at this point, but the Gunners will make some money if the Italian club sell him at some point.
It won’t be a lot, but it’s better than nothing.
