Arsenal are targeting a midfielder in the January transfer window, and this could spell bad news for Mohamed Elneny.

The 31-year-old is a popular figure at the club, and is Arsenal’s longest-serving player, having joined in January 2016.

He is the only player in the squad to have been at the club during Mikel Arteta’s playing days, and he recently praised the Spaniard for what he did upon his arrival from Basel.

Arsenal are keen on a midfielder following Thomas Partey’s injury struggles, and this could mean the likes of Jorginho see their playing time reduced, but it may now spell an end to Elneny’s career at Arsenal.

A report from TEAMtalk has now claimed that Arsenal will be open to offers for Elneny in January, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Elneny recently recovered from a long-term knee injury, and made an emotional return to action during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup victory at Brentford in September.

The Egyptian is being monitored by clubs in the Saudi Pro League, and Arsenal would likely accept an offer rather than losing him for free, particularly if a new midfielder comes in.

Although Elneny will not be missed too much on the pitch if a new midfielder arrives, with Fluminense’s Andre amongst those linked, off the pitch, he has left an excellent mark at the club.

Mikel Arteta once described him as “tremendous,” and captain Martin Odegaard recently revealed that Elneny was his best friend in the squad.

Elneny’s professionalism, character and passion have resonated well with the Arsenal fanbase over the years, and there is plenty of respect between the player and the club.

However, his already limited game time will be lowered even further if Arsenal dip into the transfer market, and a move in January could see Arsenal earn a fee and Elneny gain regular minutes.

Elneny is set to join the Egypt squad for the African Cup Of Nations in January, and he looks unlikely to feature much before then, with Arsenal eliminated from the Carabao Cup.

However, if Elneny is set to leave, then he may be offered the chance to say goodbye to the fans at the Emirates with a farewell appearance, even off the bench. After over seven years at Arsenal, he has admitted that he loves the club, and it will likely be an emotional departure for him.
