Arteta now ‘open to offers’ for £20m star who blew Arsenal staff away when he first joined

With changes afoot at Arsenal this summer, it appears that Mikel Arteta has made a decision on how he wants the left side of defence to look after a difficult decision.

The north London club are expecting a huge squad overhaul this summer, with the likes of Thomas Partey, Aaron Ramsdale and Eddie Nketiah all reportedly leaving Arsenal in the coming months.

After falling short last season, Arteta is keen to take Arsenal to the next level and close the small margins he touched upon on the quest for both Premier League and Champions League glory.

It was the left side of defence that was often criticised during the latter stages of the last campaign and with Jurrien Timber returning and a new signing in Riccardo Calafiori imminent, it appears Arsenal’s next move is going to have to be an exit in that position.

According to the latest update from Daily Mail, Arsenal are willing to let Jakub Kiwior leave the club in a surprise decision given his prominence in the team last season.

The 24-year-old defender now looks set to be sacrificed to make room for the incoming Riccardo Calafiori with Italian clubs such as Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli interested.

Kiwior has made 28 appearances since joining in a £20m deal from Spezia last year, but Gunners fans have yet to be fully convinced with Arsenal reportedly looking for ‘at least €20 million’ (£17m).

The situation in Italy is a complicated one. Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has shed light on an enquiry from Juventus, who are long-term admirers, although it appears it’s not an advanced stage.

Inter Milan are the latest club to enquire, while Napoli will need to register some sales in order to continue their Kiwior pursuit.

The structure of the potential deal remains unclear, although a loan with an obligation to buy seems likely.

Kiwior wowed staff when he first joined Arsenal

A report from The Athletic has revealed the details of how the Polish defender exceeded all expectations when he arrived, with his athleticism particularly shining.

“Since arriving at Arsenal, Kiwior has impressed with his technique and athleticism. At his initial medical assessments, staff were impressed by his planking ability and turn of pace.

“Even when away from official training, he works on his flexibility,” the report stated.

It is difficult to see what could have convinced the club in a year that he’s not what Arsenal need, but Arteta has spoken about being ruthless and we could be seeing it with this decision.

If a significant offer arrives, making space in the squad makes the most sense, but it could be a decision Arteta regrets given his profile.
