‘Could be something that happens’: Jamie Carragher now claims Arsenal may sell 25-year-old in January

There has been plenty of speculation over the future of Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, with the Englishman losing his spot in the starting XI.

Ramsdale was the clear number one at the club for the past two seasons, but the arrival of David Raya has now changed that, and the England international has found himself on the bench for the last three games.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has now claimed that this decision could even see Ramsdale depart in the January transfer window.

Speaking after Arsenal’s draw with Tottenham Hotspur, during which Raya put in a fairly disappointing performance, Carragher praised Arteta for the ruthless decision he made over the 25-year-old, and claimed that Arsenal could make a huge sale in the winter window.

“Arsenal are probably looking at it like they could get a few quid for him as well, it could be something that happens in January, but you never have two keepers at the same level at a club, especially top keepers,” he stated.

“Normally when that happens, it’s because both of them aren’t good enough and you can’t quite decide who you should be picking, you don’t get two top ones.

“I really admire Arteta for doing it, it’s really ruthless, I get that, but you know Ramsdale coming in finished Leno, it was a bit of a big name coming into Arsenal, and to be honest I don’t see Ramsdale getting back into the Arsenal team. Raya is the number one.”

Could Ramsdale leave in January?

It is unclear whether Mikel Arteta has now decided on Raya as his first-choice, or whether he intends to rotate the two, but even if Ramsdale is no longer the first pick, it seems highly unlikely that he could be sold in January.

An exit mid-season could disrupt the dressing room, and if Ramsdale is given opportunities in the cups and Champions League, he could still have a huge part to play.

Arteta has previously insisted that he wants both options, and Ramsdale would need replacing if he were to leave in January, which would hand additional pressure in the winter window which Arsenal do not need.
