David Ornstein wrote on his column on The Athletic about the secret clauses inserted by RB Salzburg in Domink Szoboszlai’s contract.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for the Hungarian ahead of next month’s transfer window. Szoboszlai even fueled those rumours by liking a picture about Arsenal on Instagram after our win in the Europa League against Rapid Wien last week. (Read here)

My Revenge On Ben Foster

The 20-year-old is on the radar of a number of clubs across Europe, but considering Arsenal’s recent results, we need him more than any other side at the moment.

Szoboszlai has a release clause that makes him available for just £23 million. That makes him extremely affordable for Arsenal, but Ornstein has shed light on stipulations that could make the deal a difficult one to complete.

Complicated clauses in Szoboszlai’s contract

Arsenal will have to pay the entire sum of his release clause in one go – just like we triggered Thomas Partey’s clause in the summer. That will make it slightly more difficult, but it’s not the end of the world. However, there are other conditions that could ruin the deal for us.

Ornstein reveals that the release clause can only be triggered in a two-week window between the 15th and the 30th of December. Szoboszlai has to give notice that he wants to leave in the next eight days and Edu will have to fork out the money by the end of this month if Arsenal want the deal to go through.

If that wasn’t difficult enough, Salzburg also have a clause in his contract that gets them 20% of Szoboszlai’s future transfer fee. That is 20% of the total fee and not just the profit which complicates the deal for many interested parties.

If Arsenal agree to all of the clauses, they will have a little over three weeks from today to seal a deal. If they fail, they will have to wait till the end of June to sign him where they will again only get a two-week window to complete the deal.

Arsenal aren’t the easiest club to negotiate with and we have seen that plenty of times in the past. These many clauses could effectively end our pursuit before we even start it. That would be a real shame considering that Szoboszlai is precisely the kind of player we need in our squad at the moment.
