Arsenal will still be aiming to launch another serious bid to win the Premier League title this season. 

Arsenal have finished as runners up in each of the last two Premier League campaigns. They are already off the pace so far this season, trailing league leaders Liverpool by seven points with ten games played.

Arsenal did not expect Edu to abandon his post on Wednesday, and as such it would appear that there was no solid succession plan in place for the Brazilian. 

The search for his replacement will now be underway, and there will be pressure on the new appointment once they are brought to the Emirates Stadium.

Winning a Premier League title must be Arsenal’s top priority, but they will need to add quality to their squad in order to do so. If Edu’s replacement arrives before the January transfer window opens, then they will be expected to make an immediate impact in that window.

Why Viktor Gyokeres must be Arsenal’s top January transfer target

One way Edu’s replacement can immediately endear themselves to the Emirates Stadium faithful is by addressing Arsenal’s long-standing need to sign a striker.

In that regard, Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres has to be the Gunners’ top transfer target this winter. The Swedish forward is one of the most devastating goalscorers in European football, as his stats prove.

Gyokeres is available to Arsenal for £86 million. If Arteta’s men are still in the title race by the time the January window rolls around, then the 26-year-old’s arrival in North London could be enough to spur the club on to glory.
