The future of Aaron Ramsdale at Arsenal is in significant doubt.

Early on this season, Aaron Ramsdale lost his regular starting spot at Arsenal. Summer signing David Raya has usurped the 25-year-old in the pecking order, and has now established himself as the first choice between the sticks.

As a result of this reshuffle, Ramsdale has been restricted to appearances in the EFL Cup, since Raya made his debut in mid-September.

Much has been made of Mikel Arteta’s decision to demote Ramsdale. Plenty in the media have spoken out in defence of the four-cap England international.

Ramsdale himself has spoken out publicly about how hurt he has been by the decision to bench him. His own father also recently gave his verdict on the situation.

All of this talk has inevitably served to fuel the speculation about the goalkeeper’s future.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on what Ramsdale’s plans are in terms of exiting the Emirates Stadium.

Aaron Ramsdale at a crossroads in his Arsenal career

As quoted by Caught Offside, the reporter said, “I think this is a normal response from the player’s father – it’s not his agent, it’s not something that points towards any negotiations or efforts to leave Arsenal.”

“He obviously wants to see Aaron happy but right now it’s a difficult moment. Still, my understanding remains the same as earlier this week – Ramsdale wants to fight for his place at Arsenal, at the moment there are no negotiations with any other club.”

It is admirable that Ramsdale remains determined to fight his way back into Arteta’s plans. Plenty of Arsenal fans would certainly love to see him succeed in this endeavour. It is also useful for the Gunners if Ramsdale is happy to stick around and compete for the game time, until the end of the season at least. If Ramsdale were to leave in January, the Gunners would needs to source a replacement, which is a task they could do without.

It is hard to see Ramsdale getting his place back from Raya, though. The 28-year-old is a better tactical fit for the style of play Arteta demands.

For the good of his career, Ramsdale should seriously consider moving on from Arsenal. With EURO 2024 on the horizon, he needs to be playing regularly at this stage of his career.
