The transfer saga surrounding Mikel Merino and Arsenal has dragged on for several weeks now.
It is clear that Arsenal need to reinforce their midfield contingent in this summer transfer window.
Whilst Declan Rice is a star player for the club, Mikel Arteta must recognise that he needs additional support. Jorginho is a player in decline, and Thomas Partey can’t be relied upon to remain fit and available.
Mikel Merino has been heavily linked with a switch to the Emirates Stadium for some time. The Real Sociedad star could be the solution to the Gunners’ problems in the middle of the park.
Arteta is known to admire Merino, and it is easy to see what the Euro 2024 winner would bring to North London. The 28-year-old has plenty of experience, including an existing understanding of the Premier League following a loan stint with Newcastle United some years ago, and is still in his peak years.
The Spaniard ought to work well alongside Rice, as the duo could rotate and interchange with one another, sharing duties in both the No. 6 role and more advanced No. 8 position. On top of that, Merino is an expert duel winner, and can have an impact at both ends of the pitch.
It now seems that this transfer saga is finally set to come to a close.

Fabrizio Romano’s wordless message to Arsenal fans about Mikel Merino
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, reporting on X, has now used the medium of emojis to hint that Merino is now on the verge of sealing his switch to Arsenal.
Arsenal sporting director Edu recently held private talks with Merino, as negotiations over a transfer dragged on.
It would now appear, though, that all of those talks, between all involved parties, are set to come to a conclusion.
Other Arsenal transfer priorities
Beyond needing to bolster their midfield unit, there may well be other areas of the pitch in which Arsenal invest before the closure of the transfer window.
The Gunners have been on the hunt for a striker all summer. The latest Ivan Toney update has got Arsenal fans talking.
On top of that, Arsenal will need to replace Aaron Ramsdale, if the outcast goalkeeper is moved on.
