Arsenal have now officially announced the permanent signing of David Raya after a roller-coaster year in the goalkeeping position.

A year ago, Arsenal were settled with Aaron Ramsdale as the first-choice option between the sticks, but they caused some surprise when Raya then arrived from Brentford on an initial loan.

A few weeks into the campaign, Raya replaced Ramsdale in goal, and there was intense scrutiny on him as he initially struggled, with the popular Ramsdale on the bench.

However, Raya grew into the role, and helped form the best defence in the Premier League in 2024, impressing with some outstanding performances, and Ramsdale is now set to leave as a result.

Arsenal have now announced that Raya’s move has been made permanent for around £27m, and whilst there still may be some question marks over him, five key moments during his loan spell justified Mikel Arteta’s decision to bring him in to usurp Ramsdale.

“After a year on loan as a Gunner, I can finally say that I’m an Arsenal player for the coming years. I’m excited to see what the future holds but always living in and enjoying the present,” Raya stated upon confirmation of his signing.

“It’s a dream come true to be here and I want to thank you for all the support you have already given me throughout the last year.”

David Raya was the Champions League hero for Arsenal against Porto

Arsenal reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2010, and they had Raya to thank in the last-16.

Arteta’s side struggled to break Porto down, and the tie went to penalties at the Emirates Stadium. Raya then made himself the hero as he saved two penalties in the shootout to send the North Bank into raptures, whilst Arsenal players scored all their strikes against Diogo Costa.

David Raya’s long throw to Gabriel Jesus was turning point in Arsenal career

Arsenal’s incredible 2024 form began with a 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace to end a run of three straight defeats.

The game also saw Raya showcase his quality when it comes to distribution. The third goal was scored by Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus helped set him up after a quick counter-attack started when Raya launched the ball to the Brazilian with incredible speed and precision.

This moment helped Raya prove why Arteta brought him in, for the attacking gains from his outstanding long-throwing ability.

Arsenal missed David Raya when Aaron Ramsdale returned

Raya was ineligible to play against Brentford, and a tough game in February saw Ramsdale replace him to play against his parent side.

Ramsdale made a disastrous mistake which led to a Brentford equaliser on the stroke of half-time, and fans inside the Emirates then realised that after months of uncertainty, Raya was the better option between the posts.

Raya did have a tough moment as he made a horrific mistake to allow Tottenham Hotspur to score with his side leading 3-0 in a crucial North London derby.

However, the 28-year-old bounced back in the best possible way, as with the home side putting relentless pressure on the Arsenal defence, his calmness and strength in the air meant he plucked out every cross from the sky and helped his side claim all three points.

In a tough moment where he could have crumbled, Raya showed his strong mentality to bounce back from his mistake immediately and focus.

David Raya spared Declan Rice’s blushes despite defeat to West Ham

One of the lowest points of the season came when Arsenal lost 2-0 at home to West Ham, and the scoreline could have been even worse.

Declan Rice put in a rare poor performance, which came against his former club. His old fans were jeering him, and his day went from bad to worse as he gave away a penalty in injury time.

However, Raya pulled out a magnificent save to deny Said Benrahma from the spot, and this spared Rice’s blushes somewhat.

Ramsdale had a poor penalty record in an Arsenal shirt, and Raya showed that he is the more capable option when it comes to such high-pressure situations.
