Ian Wright hints ‘proper’ target could be a better Arsenal signing than Ivan Toney

Arsenal have been linked with several strikers to solve their goalscoring issues, with Ivan Toney the main name touted with a move.

Toney has not played all season whilst serving a ban, but the Brentford striker is now set to return to action, and he could be on the move in January with Arsenal a possible destination for a big-money move.

However, if Mikel Arteta is more keen on signing someone ready to make an immediate impact, Bournemouth hitman Dominic Solanke has also been linked, having been one of the most clinical forwards in the Premier League this season.

Legendary Arsenal striker Ian Wright has now given his verdict on what both strikers could bring to the Emirates.

Ian Wright hints Arsenal should move for Solanke over Toney

Speaking on Premier League Productions (01/01/24, 2.15pm), Wright hinted that Solanke could be a better option than Toney given his form this season.

“His rise in the Premier League coming from Brentford and scoring goals, all the way to get here,” Wright stated of Toney.

“Of course, the link is something which is good for him. I don’t think he’s somebody that if you look at the goals output, that he isn’t going to do something at Arsenal, maybe he will.

“Look at the way he plays for Brentford and the way Arsenal try to play now. Then I am thinking, ‘yeah, I could see him in there.”

He then praised Solanke’s development since failed spells at Chelsea and Liverpool.

“You could also see a Dominic Solanke in the way he plays. Somebody who has got some pedigree from Chelsea from playing at a young age. Played at Liverpool. Learning his trade. Getting ridiculed for the lack of goals.

“Look at him now, he is a proper modern centre-forward in everything he does – he is another person they are going to be linked to and probably in and around.”

Can Arsenal afford either striker in January?

Unless Arsenal make a major sale in the January window, it seems highly unlikely that a big-money striker like Toney or Solanke will arrive at the Emirates this month.

Arsenal have also been linked with a summer move for Victor Osimhen, and signing a striker in January would likely prevent a future move for the Napoli sensation.

Arteta’s side are struggling in front of goal, but their disappointing defeat against Fulham saw Arsenal perform so poorly in build-up that any striker would have been starved of service, and right now the problems appear to be in creating quality chances rather than finishing.
