Just a few hours left before the transfer window comes to close and there is plenty of activity around Arsenal.

As many as three players are expected to head out of the door either on loan or permanently, but Mikel Arteta’s search for a new left-back is set to end in disappointment.

Here’s our 6:00 pm transfer roundup on deadline day.

Shkodran Mustafi

The German is off to Germany to join Sead Kolasinac at Schalke. Multiple reports have claimed that a deal is done, and Mustafi will join the Royal Blues on a free transfer after terminating his contract at Arsenal. (Football London)

Joe Willock

The midfielder is edging closer to a loan move to Newcastle United. It was initially thought to be a short-term deal until the end of the season, but new reports have claimed that he could spend the next 18 months at St. James’ Park. (Northern Echo)

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Southampton pulled out of the race to sign the versatile Englishman on loan until the end of the season. Arsenal refused to do business with Leicester City as we didn’t want to strengthen a direct rival, and it looks like West Bromwich Albion have won the race as a result. (Daily Mail)

The Baggies are expected to sign Maitland-Niles on loan until the end of the season. The 23-year-old is likely to be given regular game time in his preferred central midfield role, and that is excellent news for everyone involved as that is his best position.

Reiss Nelson

Rumours came out last night claiming Nelson could head to Spain on loan until the summer. Valencia, Real Betis and Unai Emery’s Villarreal were all reportedly keen (read here), but it looks like that isn’t going to happen.

New left-back?

It is no secret that Arsenal need a backup left full-back. Kieran Tierney has had his fair share of injuries and Arteta would have loved to bring in someone before the end of the window.

Crystal Palace’s Patrick van Aanholt was reportedly being eyed by the Gunners, but it looks like that’s unlikely now.

We are yet to make an offer for the experienced Dutchman (James Olley/ESPN), and with just a few hours left on the transfer window, it will take something extraordinary to convince Palace to let him leave.
