Arsenal’s pursuit of Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has taken another twist.
German football expert Christian Falk has revealed that Manchester City now are among a clutch of Premier League clubs monitoring Gordon’s situation ahead of the summer.
Gordon has been linked to numerous sides in recent weeks, but City are a new name in the mix.
Speaking via BILD, Falk was clear that Bayern Munich remain the frontrunners, but reinforced that English competition is being taken very seriously in Munich.
“Bayern are taking the interested parties from England very, very seriously. Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, even City are said to have their eye on him. So there are some top-class clubs at the table,” he said.
Bayern have already opened talks with Newcastle, tabling an initial offer in the region of €60 million and hoping to meet somewhere in the middle of Newcastle’s reported €80 million valuation.
Does Anthony Gordon REALLY improve Arsenal’s XI? If so, how much are YOU paying for him if you’re Arsenal?
Where Arsenal stand in the Anthony Gordon transfer race
Arsenal have been long-term admirers of Anthony Gordon and with a new left winger firmly on the agenda this summer, his name has consistently cropped up in discussions.
The 25-year-old has outscored every winger in the Arsenal squad this season, contributing 17 goals and five assists in 46 appearances for Newcastle.
But the picture is complicated. Gordon has told those close to him that Bayern is his preferred destination if the move can be agreed, and with the supervisory board now fully backing the transfer and negotiations underway, that looks increasingly likely.
Falk did dismiss one widely reported rival, however. “Barcelona isn’t one of the competitors, that’s nonsense,” he said, despite Gordon’s representatives recently being spotted in the city for meetings.
Anthony Gordon transfer alternative for Arsenal
Should Bayern win the race for Gordon, Arsenal will need to look elsewhere.
And they may look no further than their Champions League final opponents, PSG.
Contract talks with Bradley Barcola have stalled, and with PSG understood to be keen on Gabriel Martinelli, there is even a possibility of a deal that suits both clubs.
Left wing remains the priority heading into the summer. The Gordon saga will be one to watch closely but Arsenal may already be preparing for an alternative.
