Manchester United’s recent resurgence under Michael Carrick could tee us all up for an exciting summer in terms of battles in the transfer market.

While Arsenal will once again go looking for new recruits and will likely be Premier League champions in doing so, United’s improvement under Carrick is looking like giving them more hope for the summer market as well.

In the past, United and Arsenal have followed similar players. The likes of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Jurrien Timber were all monitored by both clubs.

Now, though, it looks like United are set to challenge Arsenal once again.

This time, for the £100m signing of Newcastle United star, Sandro Tonali.

Manchester United want Sandro Tonali to replace Casemiro

Newcastle are expecting talks with Tonali after he was linked with a stunning deadline day move to Arsenal just last week.

The Italian midfielder has been a standout for Eddie Howe’s men but his agent has been increasingly vocal in recent days about his future.

Now, according to The Telegraph, Arsenal face heavy competition for Tonali from old rivals Man United.

It’s claimed that officials at Old Trafford like the idea of Tonali coming in as they look for a long-term and immediate replacement for the outgoing Casemiro.

Tonali is likely to cost £100m if he is allowed to move on, matching the fee Arsenal forked out for Declan Rice.

Should Arsenal actually avoid Tonali?

This is a strange one for Arsenal to consider.

On one hand, yes, Tonali is a fine midfielder and he’s already settled and proven in the Premier League.

However, there is also the problem that Tonali would clearly bring the baggage of an agent who is actively looking to move his player on. Furthermore, Tonali hasn’t exactly shut things down either.

Do you think Arsenal will clinch the Premier League title at the Etihad?

All this harks back to the type of character that Mikel Arteta was keen to rid the club of in the first place.

Ultimately, if United want to pay £100m for Tonali, Arsenal might as well let them. Other midfielders are out there with the likes of Rice, Odegaard and Zubimendi already, it’s not like the Gunners are desperate.
