Arsenal have now confirmed that popular midfielder Emile Smith Rowe has left the club to join Premier League side Fulham.
Smith Rowe is a player adored by the Arsenal fanbase, having come through the academy ranks before enjoying a stunning first-team breakthrough in 2020.
The 24-year-old helped revive an Arsenal team in crisis alongside Bukayo Saka, and he was earmarked as a big talent for the future, as he even inherited the famous number 10 shirt when still just 21.
However, injury struggles saw him miss most of the 2022-23 campaign, and he has struggled to build up a run of fitness since, starting just three Premier League games in the last two seasons.
Smith Rowe needs to play regularly, and this motivated his desire to join Fulham, whilst Arsenal were also open to selling whilst his value remained high in order to boost the club’s finances in terms of PSR.
This does not mean Arsenal were eager to ship him out, and manager Mikel Arteta has now admitted his sadness that such a popular player and big talent has departed.

Mikel Arteta expresses sadness at Emile Smith Rowe Arsenal exit
Speaking to club media after the move was confirmed, Arteta paid tribute to Smith Rowe’s contributions over the years, and expressed his sadness at his departure.
“Emile’s commitment, attitude and energy every day was first class, always stepping up when the team needed him. He came into the first team and was instrumental during a difficult moment for us. He created an important impression, with his strong performances making our supporters proud,” Arteta stated.
“I’m sad that Emile is leaving us, but excited for him to take this new opportunity at this stage of his career, when he needs to be starting matches and playing regularly.
“Emile is loved by everyone at the club and leaves us with our gratitude, absolute respect and best wishes. We all wish Emile and his family well at Fulham.”
Emile Smith Rowe exit comes at the right time for him and Arsenal
Smith Rowe could not afford to spend another season without regular football at this stage of his career, and he has the quality to be a key player for Fulham.
He needs to build up his fitness and find his best form, and if he does, he could even play himself into contention for the England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The sale is good timing from Arsenal as well. Smith Rowe’s value is still high, and he has fetched a healthy transfer fee, but another year on the bench would have seen this drop, and with Mikel Merino set to join, the Englishman’s departure has made room for a top quality addition.
