Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu has been impressive this season, and Bayern Munich were rumoured to be interested in the defender.

Tomiyasu can play across the entire back line, and is becoming an important part of the Arsenal squad because of his versatility and defensive qualities.

The 25-year-old is currently injured, and is also in talks over a new contract at the club, but Mikel Arteta would have been wary about the reported interest from the German giants.

Bayern Munich end Tomiyasu interest

Arsenal have now been handed a boost as it has emerged that Bayern Munich have ended their interest in Tomiyasu.

Bayern were keen on the defender for a January move to bolster their back line, but the combination of both his current injury, as well as his expected participation in the Asia Cup in January has meant that they are now focusing their attentions elsewhere, as per TEAMtalk.

It now appears inevitable that Tomiyasu will sign fresh terms to extend his stay at the club, with his current deal expiring in 2025.

Tomiyasu has made 19 appearances across all competitions this season, in what has arguably been his most impressive run of form since his arrival in 2021.

He has scored once and provided three assists, with two of these coming in one stunning half against RC Lens in the Champions League.

Tomiyasu’s biggest issue since he joined has been his fitness, as he has suffered injuries at crucial times in the campaign in both of his seasons so far.

He has been described as “world-class” by teammate Ben White, and his performances have gone up a level this season.

Despite his outstanding ability, Arsenal cannot be reliant upon him as they aim to compete for the Premier League and Champions League. There is already a lack of depth at the back, and the injuries to Tomiyasu and Jurrien Timber have left Arteta alarmingly short of options.

Declan Rice has already been touted as an emergency centre-back, with Arsenal now an injury to Ben White or William Saliba away from disaster until Tomiyasu returns. His participation in the Asia Cup could even mean he does not feature for Arsenal until February.

Arsenal need to add to their back line in January to make sure they are not too reliant on Tomiyasu, but when the Japan defender is fit, he will back himself to fight for a place anywhere in the back line.
