Premier League rivals attempt to hijack Arsenal move for £19m striker with enquiry

Arsenal have been linked with Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke, but it now appears that Newcastle are also attempting to recruit him in January.

The forward has scored 12 league goals in 19 games this season, and many have claimed that Arsenal should attempt to sign him to solve their own goalscoring issues, having netted just 20 open-play league goals this season as a team.

Arsenal are struggling with financial fair play issues, making a big-money move in this window unlikely unless there are major sales, and they may now have to battle Newcastle if they are to attempt to sign Solanke.

Newcastle make enquiry for Arsenal target Dominic Solanke

A report from The Telegraph has now revealed that Newcastle enquired about Solanke, but were told that Bournemouth have no intention of selling the player in this window.

Andoni Iraola’s side are performing well, and Solanke has been a crucial part of their resurgent form. Despite interest from both Newcastle and Arsenal, the 26-year-old is unlikely to move anywhere in the January window.

Solanke joined Bournemouth for around £19m in January 2019, and has scored 69 times in 196 games for the club across both the Premier League and the Championship.

Arsenal’s financial limitations means that a move for Solanke in this window was always highly unlikely to materialise, but even if they could afford him, he is not a player who would raise the level of Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Solanke has scored just 22 goals in 115 Premier League appearances overall, and flopped at Liverpool, with just one goal in 27 games.

By comparison, the much-criticised Eddie Nketiah has scored 19 goals in 109 Premier League matches, but in significantly less minutes overall, with Nketiah totalling 3975 minutes compared to Solanke’s 7133.

Although he would arrive as a player in good goalscoring form, the potential fee needed to convince Bournemouth to sell could be staggeringly high, and Solanke is arguably not the upgrade on Gabriel Jesus Arsenal need upfront.

Arsenal have been linked with a summer move for Napoli star Victor Osimhen, and he would be a much better addition than Solanke if it is possible.

Whilst Nketiah is at the club, Arsenal are not short of numbers upfront, but could do with some extra quality, and Solanke does not fit the bill as someone who can help them compete for a Premier League title against Manchester City and Erling Haaland.
