Arsenal are yet to make a decision regarding David Luiz’s future at the club beyond the end of this season. The Brazilian’s current deal expires soon, and there has been no indication yet over a contract renewal.
Luiz has had his ups and downs in an Arsenal shirt, but the one thing nobody can deny is his leadership. The Gunners are far more assured at the back when he is starting, but a knee problem has kept him out for a while.
The former Chelsea man returned from his injury and was on the bench yesterday. It is very likely that he will play a part next week, but it’s still unclear whether Mikel Arteta will offer him a new deal to keep him around.
If a latest report is to be believed, it looks like Arsenal are considering other options at the back.
Arsenal want Ben White
The Sun claim that Arsenal are among Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain in the race to sign Brighton and Hove Albion star Ben White.
The 23-year-old is among the best young centre-halves in the Premier Leaue at the moment. He has been brilliant for Brighton this season, just like he was for Leeds United on loan in the last campaign.
Marcelo Bielsa, one of world football’s most respected coaches, is a big fan of White. He labelled the Englishman as an ‘excellent professional’ back in January, and claimed that he deserves to go to the very top. (Sussex Live)
White will certainly be in demand this summer and Brighton have reportedly slapped a £35 million price-tag on his head. That’s a lot of money, but don’t be surprised if a top club snaps him up for that fee.
The Insider’s View:
Everything depends on David Luiz’s future at the moment. If the Brazilian stays for another year, we will not need a new centre-half, but if he does leave on a free transfer, Arsenal might have to dive into the transfer market.
White would undoubtedly be a brilliant signing. He has all the qualities to become one of the best defenders in the league in a few years time, but the Gunners should really try to keep hold of Luiz instead of splashing over £35 million on White.
Luiz still has a fair bit to offer at the top-level. Apart from what he can do on the pitch, his leadership is extremely important to our young players – especially to William Saliba who will need some guidance next season.
If Luiz sticks around and helps Saliba reach the level required, Arsenal will save millions on the transfer market. That would be the smart thing to do as we all know how good the young Frenchman already is and how much better he can become in a few years time.
