Brentford star David Raya has been heavily linked with a transfer to Arsenal for almost a year now, but if The Daily Mail are to be believed, that move will not happen in the upcoming summer window.
Arsenal goalkeeping coach Inaka Cana, previously of Brentford, is a big fan of Raya. He recommended the brilliant shot-stopper to Mikel Arteta, and the Gunners tried really hard to sign him last summer as well as in January. The Bees, sadly, rejected all offers. (Guardian)
Arsenal brought in Maty Ryan in January and to be fair to him, he has done really well. However, the Gunners need someone who will push Bernd Leno for the number one spot, and Raya was viewed by many as the perfect target.
Sadly, that is no longer an option for Arsenal.
Brentford’s promotion back to the Premier League means that Raya’s £10 million release clause no longer exists. Any deal will have to be negotiated directly with the Bees, and that will make things extremely difficult.
As a result, Arsenal have reportedly decided to scrap the idea of signing Raya this summer. It is claimed that the Gunners will now widen the search for a new goalkeeper, and the Brentford star is set to stay put.
David Raya would’ve been brilliant for Arsenal
Raya is incredible, both in terms of shot-stopping and his ability to play with the ball at his feet. He has been absolutely brilliant for Brentford during his time there, so much so, that his manager Thomas Frank claimed that he was ‘possibly the best’ in the division. (Gazette Live)
Raya’s qualities in goal check all the boxes that Arteta is looking for. He would’ve been a phenomenal addition to our squad this summer, but it now looks like he will start against us twice in the Premier League next season.
That complicates things now for the Gunners. We need a new goalkeeper this summer at all costs, and with Raya now no longer an option, it will be interesting to see who Arteta and Edu will bring in to compete with Leno.
