Gianluca Di Marzio revealed yesterday that new AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho is keen to sign Arsenal star Granit Xhaka this summer.
That came in as a big surprise, especially as most of our fans don’t really rate the Swiss international. However, he is a phenomenal player, and if he really does end up moving to Italy, he will be one of the best midfielders in the whole league there.
Some Arsenal fans weren’t really convinced about the rumour, but multiple reports have backed Di Marzio’s claim since. Football London are the latest to do so, and they have now revealed how the Gunners hierarchy have responded to Roma and Mourinho.
What Arsenal have told Jose Mourinho about selling Granit Xhaka
The report claims that Arsenal have told Roma that negotiations for Xhaka will start at £20 million. It’s also claimed that the Gunners want to wrap this deal up very quickly, preferably before the start of the Euros in a couple of weeks time.
Arsenal are reportedly in a situation where we will have to sell before we can buy this summer. Xhaka is set to be used to raise funds, as are fellow midfielders Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira.
Edu is looking for a combined £60million through sales, with Xhaka set to bring in the most among the trio.
The Insider’s View:
As much as people don’t want to accept it, Xhaka is Arsenal’s most important player. We look lost without him in our midfield, which begs the question as to why we want to sell him.
If the Gunners really end up selling the former Basel man, Edu will his work cut out for him. There are very few midfielders in the world who can fill Xhaka’s void at Arsenal – most of them will prove to be too expensive for us.
If Xhaka does leave, Arsenal will ideally need two new midfielders to replace him.
A player like Yves Bissouma will bring in the defensive stability we want, but we’ll also need someone to come in and unlock defences with exceptional long balls from deep – something Xhaka has been doing effortlessly for a few years now.
