According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City, and the transfer could be completed as early as next week.
It is no secret at this point that the Brazilian is our priority transfer target this summer. Mikel Arteta and Jesus know each other very well thanks to their time together at the Etihad Stadium, and almost everyone feels this move is perfect for both parties.
Jesus will soon enter the final year of his contract and is desperate to leave City in search of regular game time ahead of the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
When Arsenal could sign Gabriel Jesus and how much they’ll pay
The report claims that Arsenal are confident of signing Jesus after holding talks with Manchester City, and the deal could well be sealed in the next seven to 10 days.
It has been claimed that the two clubs are close to reaching an agreement for the transfer of the Brazil international, with the Gunners set to pay £50 million for his services.
An argument can be made that Arsenal are overpaying for Jesus. City signed him for £27 million five years ago, and although the Brazilian is a much better player now, he’s just over 12 months away from being available for free.
However, irrespective of the fee, almost everyone will agree that Jesus would be a fantastic signing for us, and that is the most important thing.
What next for Arsenal after Jesus?
If the report is true and Arsenal do complete a deal for Jesus in the next 10 days, Mikel Arteta and Edu deserve enormous praise. However, the job’s not done just yet.
Arsenal will still need a new central midfielder, a winger if Nicolas Pepe leaves, and a left-sided defender – preferably someone who can fill in at both left-back and left centre-half.
Youri Tielemans is reportedly our prime midfield target, while Leeds United star Raphinha is said to be Arteta’s pick to replace our record signing. Ajax star Lisandro Martinez is apparently our preferred option at the back, and he can cover for both Gabriel Magalhaes and Kieran Tierney.
Edu and Arteta have a lot to do over the next month or so. Hopefully, they can get all those deals done before the start of the new season.
