Arsenal appear to be getting closer to completing their first summer signing in Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

A deal is in the works as there is contact between Arsenal and Bologna for the 22-year-old, who shone for Italy at Euro 2024.

Mikel Arteta has been given the green light by Calafiori despite interest from Juventus, with his manager at Bologna Thiago Motta keen on bringing him to the Italian giants.

Arteta has seemingly won the race though, and he has convinced another top talent that his project at Arsenal is the best place for a young player to further his development whilst challenging for trophies.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Calafiori is eager to work with Arteta, and that the Spaniard’s presence at Arsenal influenced his desire to join.

“Riccardo Calafiori gave a green light to Arsenal in terms of contract & project – he’s really excited, really tempted by this possibility to work under Mikel Arteta, who is a big fan of the player,” he stated.

“Arteta’s staff know the player so well.”

Chelsea and Juventus were also keen on Calafiori, but it seems that the allure of working with Arteta, as well as Bologna’s strong relationship with Arsenal after the deal for Takehiro Tomiyasu three years ago, has helped the Gunners secure their target.

Calafiori can add defensive ruggedness, technical security and versatility to the back line, and whilst his performances at the Euros did stand out, Arsenal would have had their eye on him before the tournament given his fine performances for Bologna.

The Italian is set to link up with his International teammate Jorginho should his move go through, and it is clear that he is keen on challenging for the title next season.
