The four big transfers Mikel Arteta wants to make at Arsenal before next season

Arsenal’s poor recent form has raised questions about the quality and depth of the squad, and Mikel Arteta may look to the market for solutions.

Arsenal spent heavily in the summer transfer window on Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, David Raya and Jurrien Timber, but are performing worse than they were this time last year, and there have been calls to sign a striker, with Ivan Toney strongly linked.

The summer spending has meant that Arsenal’s potential to sign players in January is limited, but with Arteta’s squad not far off completion in his eyes, it has now emerged that he wants to strengthen in four more positions before the start of next season.

A report from The Daily Mail has now revealed that in the next two windows, Arsenal want to sign a defender, two midfielders and a striker in order to bolster the quality and quantity of options available to Arteta.

Jorrel Hato of Ajax has been linked as Arsenal need a defender in the January window. Injuries to Takehiro Tomiyasu and Timber have left Arsenal short at the back in recent weeks, and they are potentially one more injury away from disaster.

Arsenal did sign two midfielders in Rice and Havertz, but Jorginho, Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey have all been linked with moves away, and Jorginho and Elneny are both out of contract at the end of the season. This could mean that at least one, if not more options are needed, and Douglas Luiz is a major target.

Arsenal’s attack has been heavily criticised this season, and it has been claimed that a striker would help solve a lot of problems in front of goal. Toney is the name on everyone’s lips, whilst Victor Osimhen of Napoli has also been linked with a summer move.

Given the financial fair play issues Arsenal are facing, it seems likely that most of the desired deals will have to wait until the summer, but a defender is necessary in the coming weeks.

Ben White’s form has been questionable in recent weeks, and with no adequate cover for him or William Saliba on the right-hand side of defence, if either player were to pick up an injury, it would plummet Arsenal into crisis.

Arsenal’s title challenge collapsed when Saliba picked up an injury last season, and Arteta has to recruit a defender who can cover for him or White if he is to avoid a similar mistake in this campaign.
