Arsenal are in the market for a new midfielder, but they also face a conundrum over several options within the squad.
Thomas Partey has been linked with an exit, as has Emile Smith Rowe, with Crystal Palace and Fulham among the clubs interested in the Englishman.
With Mikel Merino the latest midfielder to be linked with Arsenal, it appears that Edu Gaspar is keen on upgrading the players in this position, as alternative options in the ‘left eight’ role are being considered. However, this could leave Fabio Vieira in limbo.
Vieira joined Arsenal for £34m from Porto two years ago, but has made just five Premier League starts since, and whilst he has shown glimpses of talent, he is running out of time to prove himself in North London.
Given that a more popular player in Vieira’s position could leave, with Smith Rowe also capable of playing out wide or in midfield, many may question Vieira’s future at Arsenal. However, Mikel Arteta has not lost faith in him yet.
Mikel Arteta backs Fabio Vieira to succeed at Arsenal
A report from Football Transfers has now revealed that despite Vieira’s struggles so far, Arteta believes that he can have a bigger impact next season.
“Arteta believes that Vieira’s best is yet to come and that he wants to keep the midfielder at the club this summer,” they stated.
“Arteta’s admiration for Vieira stems from the player’s technical prowess, versatility, and ability to impact games in various midfield roles. Arteta has emphasised that his creative skills and vision align perfectly with Arsenal’s attacking philosophy, making him an important part of the squad.”
Pre-season will be crucial for Fabio Vieira

The potential sale of Smith Rowe, with Vieira being given more chances next season, would be a big show of faith from Arteta, and the 24-year-old now needs to grasp his opportunity to succeed.
Vieira started last season well, but lost his place in the side before picking up a long-term injury. Fitness has been a concern for him since his arrival, and he will need to maintain an injury-free run in the side.
Pre-season could be make or break for Vieira. With Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka returning late from Euro 2024, a strong showing in pre-season could see Vieira handed opportunities at the start of the season. If Vieira does not perform well in the upcoming USA tour, then he may never get a better chance to force his way into the side.
