Arsenal are set to complete a deal to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna in the coming hours for less than £17 million.
No Arsenal fan really expected the Gunners to sign a new player today. The rumour mill was fairly quiet and the fact that we hadn’t yet offloaded a number of our own players made an incoming extremely unlikely.
However, Edu stepped up on the final day of the transfer window and if Fabrizio Romano is to be believed, our technical director has secured Tomiyasu’s signature.
Romano: Takehiro Tomiyasu to Arsenal is done
Transfer guru Romano has been extremely confident since the start of the transfer window that Arsenal will sign a new right-back. It didn’t look like that would happen until this morning, but it seems like his sources were spot on.
Arsenal have agreed a deal with Bologna and the papers have been signed. Tomiyasu has completed a medical in Italy as well, and it looks like an official announcement is just a matter of time.
Tomiyasu is expected to sign a four-year deal at the Emirates. He is set to be Arsenal’s sixth signing of the summer and we can almost certainly say that he will be the last incoming until at least the start of the January transfer window.
Who is Takehiro Tomiyasu?
Tomiyasu is a 22-year-old Japanese international who joined Bologna in 2019. In just two years in Italy, he has made a name for himself as a fantastic defender, and a big move was only a matter of time.
He is hugely versatile having played in the heart of defence as well as at right-back. Arsenal’s current needs hint that he will mostly be used as a full-back, but he is more than capable of slotting in alongside someone like Gabriel Magalhaes in the middle.
A report from The Athletic revealed today that Arsenal have been looking at Tomiyasu all summer. They claim that Mikel Arteta heavily pushed for this deal to go through and it’s great news that the Gunners boss has got his wish.
