According to Corriere dello Sport, Arsenal have now opened talks to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves.
The Gunners are desperate to bring in a new midfielder before the transfer window shuts on Monday. Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny will all likely be available when we play next, but Arteta is still keen to bring in a new face.
It looked like that would be Arthur Melo of Juventus, but that deal seems to have collapsed. As a result, Arsenal have turned their attention to Neves, who was labelled as ‘a fantastic player‘ by Nuno Espirito Santo back in May last year.
Ruben Neves to Arsenal?
The main focus of the Italian outlet’s report is Granit Xhaka, who’s still apparently wanted by Jose Mourinho at Roma. The Swiss international was very close to leaving the club in the summer, but that deal broke down.
Roma are set to try again in the next few days or at the end of this season. Irrespective of what happens on that front, Arsenal want a new midfielder and the report claims that negotiations are ongoing between Edu and Wolves to sort out a deal for Neves.
The Portuguese international is a fantastic player. He has been brilliant for Wolves since he joined them and it is no surprise that Arsenal are keen. However, whether the Wanderers will allow him to go in the next four days is the big question at this moment in time.
The Insider’s View:
When Neves was linked with a move to Arsenal last summer, many Arsenal fans were excited.
The former Porto man is fantastic on the ball, is not too bad defensively and he’s arguably an even bigger goal threat from distance than Xhaka is, which makes him a fantastic fit for us. To add to that, he’s still only 24 and he will only get better.
It will be interesting to see if Edu can sort a deal out in the coming days. It is extremely unlikely that Wolves would let one of their most important players leave this late in the window, but stranger things have happened in the past, which makes the next few days really exciting.
