One Arsenal player’s appearance against Leeds United took Alan Shearer by surprise on matchday two.
The Gunners beat Leeds 5-0 in a five-star return to the Emirates in the Premier League.
Fans were treated to a display that presented many highs, including Max Dowman’s history-making debut, Viktor Gyokeres’ brace and Jurrien Timber’s sublime attacking shift.
In a game that was full of positive points for Mikel Arteta’s side, some things slipped under the radar, with one player’s input actually surprising Alan Shearer.

Alan Shearer forgot Leandro Trossard played for Arsenal
Arteta made a statement with his substitutes, bringing on teenage trio Dowman, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly, as well as giving Cristhian Mosquera his Premier League debut.
In comparison, the other substitution on the day was overlooked, as Leandro Trossard replaced the injured Bukayo Saka.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer admitted he actually forgot Trossard played for Arsenal.
“I was thinking, goodness me, look at the players that they brought Trossard on. I forgot about him,” he said.
The pundit was speaking with regard to Arsenal’s improved squad depth, waxing lyrical about the options Arteta now has available to him going forward.
“Then you’ve got Eze to come in, Martinelli. I mean, the numbers they’ve got are really incredible now, the squad that Arsenal have got.”
With high praise came high expectations, as Shearer then pushed for Arsenal to win some major silverware this season.
“So they have to go on, and they have to win something pretty big this season.”
Trossard’s game time will be limited
Going back to Shearer’s comment on Trossard, it’s been quite an eventful summer for the Belgian.
Trossard was generating transfer interest, leading to the belief that the winger would be sold this window.

Instead, the news was announced that Trossard had signed a new contract.
What should be an exciting time for the 30-year-old could quickly turn into a perplexing one, as Arsenal’s capture of Eberechi Eze only forces the £27m signing further down the pecking order.
It remains to be seen how much game time Trossard manages to land this season, in what will be a testing time for the Belgium international.
