Arsenal fans were speaking about Ben White a lot during the Gunners’ Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton.
The early stages of the contest were tough for Arsenal, as for the first time in a long while, Mikel Arteta’s side were ambushed at the back.
Brighton attempted to punish Myles Lewis-Skelly at left-back, as Arteta’s entirely rotated back four were put to the test.
Starting alongside Piero Hincapie, Lewis-Skelly, and Cristhian Mosquera was Ben White, who returned to right-back to give Jurrien Timber a rest.

Arsenal fans think Ben White is back
White had a tremendous pre-season at Arsenal, but his work in the summer didn’t prevent him from experiencing several spells on the sidelines.
Against Brighton, Arteta granted White his third start of the season, and it’s fair to say that fans were happy to see him back.
“You almost forget what a quality Defender Ben White is,” one supporter said, as fans gathered on X to share a similar review of the Englishman’s start to the game.
“Ben White still got it btw, I was worried cl.”
“Ben White looking a bit like himself again? Overlapping, carrying the ball, I’ve missed this.”
“Happy with Ben White, though. Looks back to his best.”
Some Arsenal fans were worried about White, noticing a slight decline from the 28-year-old, but against Brighton, such woes disappeared.
After a lacklustre first half, one Arsenal fan said, “Ben White still has it, that’s the positive side of it.”
Another echoed that point of view, “Ben White looks like he’s back. That’s a plus from that half.”
The consensus from White’s display against his former club was that he was showing signs of his past levels, which was a huge relief for Arsenal fans.
“Ben White might be getting back to his best.”
“When you find out your goat still got it ( Ben White).”
“Ben White showing his signs of his former self.”
White’s change of role is a surprise
If Arsenal fans were told in the 2022/23 season that White wouldn’t be a starter at right-back, many would be stunned.
That’s the reality for the defender right now, as Timber is keeping White away from the starting XI in the Premier League.
| Season | Premier League appearances |
| 2021/22 | 32 |
| 2022/23 | 38 |
| 2023/24 | 37 |
| 2024/25 | 17 |
| 2025/26* | 1 |
Of course, injuries have not helped White’s cause, but even when available, Arteta has maintained his trust in Timber, a decision that can’t be argued.
White has gone from a consistent starter to a player Arteta utilises when rotating, which, while being frustrating for the player, isn’t bad news at all for the Gunners.
