Upon Declan Rice dropping to the bench against Brentford, Arsenal turned to Thomas Partey to sit at the base of their midfield.

By this stage of the season, Partey is usually struggling with his fitness at Arsenal, an absence that Mikel Arteta is no stranger to navigating.

However, in the final year of his contract, the 31-year-old is giving Arsenal a headache were the club planning to let him leave and seek a younger alternative.

Partey has proved his fitness and also his ability to win games for the Gunners this season, a crucial performer more often than once.

And when given the chance to start against Brentford, after sitting on the bench during games against Everton and Ipswich Town, Partey was excellent in place of Rice.

Arsenal fans want Mikel Arteta to offer Thomas Partey a new contract

Given that Jurrien Timber will be suspended against Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal’s next big test in the Premier League, Partey is expected to shift to right-back to face Kaoru Mitoma.

Taking to X, one fan was frustrated that Partey will be inevitably moved from his strongest position, a player they believe that Arteta should still be building around.

They wrote: “I don’t want to see Partey at RB against Brighton with a performance like this in midfield.”

Fans seemed to be of the opinion that Partey is underrated at the Emirates Stadium, a player who is vital to any title hopes.

“Partey plays 6 and all of a sudden we look like title contenders..this isn’t rocket science..how most fans don’t understand this is baffling.”

Of course, these kind of performances also spark questions in regards to Arsenal offering Partey a new contract, who many believe should be staying in north London.

One fan simply wrote: “Partey again amazing. I would extend his contract.”

Thomas Partey is free to sign for Barcelona

As mentioned, Partey could leave Arsenal for free if the club don’t agree a new deal with the midfielder, who is now able to sign a pre-contract with the likes of Barcelona.

Arsenal are interested in Martin Zubimendi as a potential long-term replacement for Partey, a signing which is unlikely to happen this month.

And some may still feel as if that’s the right move for the club, given Partey’s fitness record.

Although things have improved since August, Partey is now in his thirties and unfortunately there is every reason to believe that he will miss a spell of games injured once again.

A tough decision for Arteta and Arsenal’s newly-restructed decision-makers, who may already be making their stance clear given that Partey is yet to agree to new terms.
