Arsenal face another tough test in the Premier League, with Newcastle United awaiting the Gunners at St James’ Park.

Visiting St James’ Park is always a gruelling task for Arsenal.

The two sides met four times last season, with the Gunners winning just one of the contests.

It was back-to-back 1-0 defeats when Mikel Arteta’s side visited the North East in 2024/25, setting the scene for the hurdle that awaits the North Londoners on matchday six.

Ian Wright and Roy Keane predict Arsenal vs Newcastle United score

After dropping points against Manchester City, Arsenal will be desperate to return to winning ways.

It’s too early to talk about the Premier League title race; however, it’s difficult to ignore that Liverpool are already leading the table by five points.

There’s been a lot of talk about Arteta’s conservative approach in bigger games, with all eyes on how the Arsenal manager instructs his team at St James’ Park.

Ahead of the fixture, pundits Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville and Ian Wright shared their thoughts on what the scoreline could be.

“1-1, I’m going Roy, I said 1-1,” Wright said on the Stick To Football podcast.

Neville replied, “That means you’ll be seven points behind.”

Carragher then chimed in, reminding Wright of the repercussions his score prediction could bring.

“So, right, so you’ve gone 1-1, but you’re going to Liverpool to win. If that happens, is it over?” Carragher asked.

Wright changed his mind, backing Arsenal to win, “No, because we have to win, I have to change, I have to have Arsenal to win.”

Keane then turned the prediction on its head, submitting an opposing call to the Arsenal legend by saying, “Newcastle 2-1.”

While Keane thinks Arsenal will lose, Troy Deeney has backed the Gunners to beat Newcastle.

Mikel Arteta said St James’ Park is one of the toughest places to visit

If there’s one team Arteta won’t want to play when a win is needed, it’s Newcastle.

Since becoming Arsenal manager, the boss has marched his side to St James’ Park five times in the Premier League, winning twice and suffering three defeats.

Arsenal’s last five Premier League games against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference in November 2023, Arteta described Newcastle away as one of the ‘toughest’ fixtures.

“It’s a big one. It’s one of the toughest places to go and win. We’ve done it and there is nothing new to it; we know what we’re expecting.”

Despite knowing what to expect from Newcastle, Arsenal couldn’t get the job done in that game, losing 1-0.

Pressure is on the Gunners early into the season to keep in touching distance to Liverpool, making Sunday’s fixture all the more important.
