Ian Wright says one Arsenal star must ‘do better’ after Chelsea moment – it’s not Leandro Trossard

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright felt that one of Mikel Arteta’s players let the side down in a crucial moment on Sunday. 

There were many things that the Gunners didn’t get quite right when they took on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

After the 1-1 draw in West London, Mikel Arteta slammed Arsenal’s defending when it came to the equaliser that they conceded.

There were missed opportunities at the other end of the pitch too, and had the Gunners more clinical they would have come away from this London derby with three vital Premier League points on the board.

Ian Wright calls out Gabriel Martinelli

Arteta collapsed to a heap when Leandro Trossard missed a golden opportunity to snatch a winner from close range with the last kick of the game. 

However, the Belgian was not the only Arsenal star to be guilty of passing up an opportunity. 

Whilst Gabriel Martinelli did ultimately get on the scoresheet, the Brazilian could have put the Gunners ahead earlier. 

In the first half, Martinelli had an opportunity to fire past Robert Sanchez, but his effort was both too tame and too close to the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Recalling this moment on the Wrighty’s House podcast, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright said: “I do feel that Martinelli, it was a big game for him. I thought the chance in the first half, he’s got to do better with that. 

“For me, simply, the finish was a very tame finish, in respect of side foot from where he was. That should have been laces, blast, half volley through everything from where he was. But again, it’s all about confidence and recognising.”

Are Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli a problem for Arsenal?

Martinelli is fighting for his Arsenal future at the moment, and has looked short on confidence so far this season. 

Whilst his goal at Stamford Bridge will have given the 23-year-old a much-needed boost, Arteta still needs more from him. However, the manager still clearly has faith in the Brazil international. 

The Spanish coach’s belief in Trossard may well be waning, though. The former Brighton man has been in abysmal form in recent weeks.

Arsenal fans hammered Trossard after his display against Chelsea, and the time may well have come for the North London club to seriously consider moving him on.
