Jurrien Timber seriously annoyed with something that happened for the ‘first time’ in Arsenal’s defeat to Newcastle

When Anthony Gordon tucked home Newcastle United’s second goal against Arsenal in their 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium, Jurrien Timber was slightly caught on his heels.

In fairness to Timber, Gordon anticipated the follow-up to Alexander Isak’s shot brilliantly – it would be harsh to blame the Arsenal defender too strongly.

Mikel Arteta seriously missed Timber during Arsenal’s recent draw against Brighton & Hove Albion when the right-back was suspended.

Thomas Partey played out of position, a move that Arteta has been forced to make, but one that is also hurting his side in other areas.

Timber is vital for the Gunners moving forward, whether he’s playing on the left or on the right, a defender Arsenal seriously missed last season.

Jurrien Timber suffers career first in Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Arsenal

That being said, Timber reflected on Arsenal’s defeat in an interview immediately after full-time at the Emirates.

The defender shared some interesting comments, particularly when reflecting on the tie being over two legs.

Timber insisted that Arsenal could still progress to the final, but admitted that he was very annoyed with how the first turned out on Tuesday evening.

He began: “It’s all to play for in that game still, semi-final, it’s still not done, but at the same time, we have other games coming up now.

“But we have to look back at this game and learn a lot, yeah.”

Then, when asked about the nature of playing over two legs, Timber admitted that he hadn’t suffered a similar scenario in his career to date, when his side had a first leg deficit.

Timber continued: “Well it’s actually my first time like this, I don’t like losing the first match so I didn’t really think about that but now this is the case.

“I think it’s a good thing that we have a second chance in the second leg.”

Mikel Arteta faced with seven more ties before Arsenal play Newcastle again

In terms of the games Arsenal need to refocus for, Arteta’s team will play seven more fixtures before their trip to St James’ Park.

The Gunners will welcome Manchester United to N5 for their FA Cup third round tie on Sunday, a game which precludes a north London derby.

Arsenal will have four more home games in a row before travelling to Wolverhampton Wanderers later this month, and the Emirates needs to become a fortress again.

Martin Odegaard was criticised after his performance against Newcastle, one of several players who need to step up their attacking output.

Arsenal’s season is far from over, but fresh attacking impetus is needed, and the Gunners can’t ignore the chance to strengthen in the transfer market.
