Referee Chris Kavanagh had his work cut out in the London derby as Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0 to earn a vital three points.

While only one goal came from the contest, it was a lively affair in N5 as all eyes were on the officials at several points in the match.

Arsenal were denied a penalty after Marc Cucurella handled the ball with Wesley Fofana also incredibly lucky not to see red.

What matters is that the game was won for the hosts, seeing Mikel Merino claim the winning goal by latching onto a Martin Odegaard corner.

Martin Odegaard makes Arsenal history against Chelsea

Odegaard has been under the spotlight this season due to his inconsistent form but, the playmaker was able to make his contribution count against the Blues.

The Norweigan drifted a corner onto the head of Merino who scored to win Arsenal the game however, attention from the goal was diverted from the scorer to the creator.

That’s because, with his contribution, Odegaard recorded his fifth Premier League assist against Chelsea, more than any Arsenal player in history.

The skipper overtook both Cesc Fabregas and Dennis Bergkamp who had four against the Blues in their Arsenal careers, with Odegaard grabbing his fifth.

It was also a milestone contribution for the 26-year-old, who overtook Invincible hero Freddie Ljungberg in the Premier League assist charts at Arsenal, recording his 27th to leapfrog the Swede’s record of 26.

Odegaard wrote his name into the history books with his assist against Chelsea but, on a day that saw the captain break a record, fans weren’t wowed by his performance.

Arsenal fans not impressed with Odegaard

It’s been a difficult season for the skipper, who was forced to overcome an early injury at the start of the campaign.

Since then, Odegaard has received a lot of criticism for his displays, with more feedback fired the Norweigan’s way after the Chelsea win.

On social media, one Arsenal fan called the midfielder ‘rubbish’, an opinion shared by others.

“Odegaard has to be kidding me with the rubbish he’s been playing.”

“Trossard and Odegaard I am losing patience,” another said, as one supporter predicted that the playmaker won’t improve.

“Odegaard’s never gonna improve. Arteta is going to take a long time to realise his beloved boy needs to be replaced.”

Another fan wasn’t surprised by Odegaard’s questionable overall performance, calling him ‘useless’.

“Odegaard useless again,” they said when sharing their overview of the fixture.

It’s clear that the former Real Madrid star needs to up his game to end the season on a high, with fans expecting more from the captain.
