Arsenal suffered a gut-wrenching defeat in the FA Cup third round following a penalty shoot-out loss to Manchester United.

Arsenal began the game without injured Riccardo Calafiori and went behind early in the second half thanks to a wonderful finish from United skipper Bruno Fernandes.

A Gabriel Maghalhaes strike then brought Arsenal level before captain Martin Odegaard missed a penalty to send the game all the way to penalties.

Heroics in the shoot-out from Red Devils goalkeeper Altay Bayindir sent Arsenal crashing out and heaped more pressure on manager Mikel Arteta.

Five things you missed from Arsenal vs Manchester United

Whilst injury concerns grows further and , there were several things fans might have missed from the game.

Arsenal failed to have a shot on target in the first half

Despite controlling the game and having 60% possession, Arsenal did not manage a single shot on target during the first half.

Gabriel Martinelli had a goal ruled out for offside and captain Martin Odegaard fired a free kick over the bar but the Gunners failed to test Altay Bayindir after Andre Onana was surprisingly dropped by Manchester United.

Manchester United’s stubborn defence frustrated Arsenal and their recent creative problems were evident for all to see during the first half.

Raheem Sterling replaced injured Gabriel Jesus instead of Leandro Trossard

Gabriel Jesus went off injured in the first half and despite featuring 28 times in all competitions this season, Leandro Trossard was not the player called upon to replace the Brazilian.

Raheem Sterling was brought on to play on the right hand flank and has only just returned from a knee injury of his own.

Trossard rejected a new contract offer ‘immediately’ from the club earlier this week and perhaps boss Arteta was sending a message to the Belgian forward. Trossard did enter the pitch as a replacement for Myles Lewis-Skelly in extra time.

Kai Havertz poor finishing continues

Kai Havertz missed a glorious opportunity against Newcastle United in the semi final of the Carabao Cup that could have brought Arsenal further back into the tie.

Having just gone 1-0 down to a fantastic strike from Bruno Fernandes, Havertz was presented the chance to equalise shortly after but blazed wide from just six yards out. With just two minutes remaining in normal time, Havertz then struck over the bar from even closer as Arsenal pushed for a late winner.

Unbelievably, Havertz, given a 1/10 in the Arsenal player ratings was then also denied during the penalty shoot-out with Bayindir saving brilliantly down to his left hand side.

Gabriel Martinelli ushered Diogo Dalot off the pitch after red card

Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 61st minute after only receiving his first caution in the 49th minute.

Manchester United were leading at the time of the sending off before a tackle from Dalot on Mikel Merino changed the complexion of the game completely.

Gabriel Martinelli was then seen ushering Dalot off the pitch as the Gunners wanted to take advantage of their extra man for as long as possible to get back into the tie.

Mikel Arteta was also seen running to the fourth official to complain about the challenge from the Manchester United defender.

Manuel Ugarte avoids red card after clash with Havertz

After the award of the Arsenal penalty for a foul by Harry Maguire on Havertz, an altercation broke out between several of the Arsenal and Man United players.

It was reminiscent of the famous clashes between the two clubs during the late 90s and early 2000s where Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira often clashed.

During the scuffle, Manuel Ugarte was spotted to have headbutted striker Havertz and without the use of VAR until the fifth round in the FA Cup, the Uruguayan midfielder escaped any punishment having already been on a yellow card.
