Alexander Isak issues interesting claim on his future when asked about Arsenal transfer interest

For the last year or so, Arsenal have consistently been linked with a move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

At the start of the summer, Arsenal made Isak their priority signing according to reports, however it soon became clear that Newcastle were not interested in selling.

In truth, it’s very hard to imagine that Newcastle’s stance will ever change in that regard – why would they want to sell their best player to Arsenal?

If Isak changes clubs in the near future, it will likely be something to do with his own preference, or perhaps even his contract situation.

That being said, speculation over Isak’s future has been rife of late, leading to a bold response from the striker when talking over in Sweden.

Alexander Isak insists that he’s fully focused on scoring goals for Newcastle

Away with the Swedish international side right now, Isak was asked by Fotbollskanalen to comment on reports over some unrest between him and Newcastle over contract talks which had reportedly stalled.

Isak was very clear in his response, saying he was happy, focused and not thinking about anything other than succeeding for Eddie Howe’s side.

He said: “Throughout my career, I have never talked about or really commented on the move rumours during the season.

“There have been many such years where it has been talked about. It doesn’t affect me.

“I am commenting on my situation in Newcastle and I have never had any problem there. I am fully focused on my task there and that we will have a fantastic season.

“There are still great opportunities for that. I have no thoughts about anything else.”

Pressed further about reports of contract talks stalling, Isak replied: “The only thing I can say is that a lot of information and rumours often come out.

“Much of what I read is not true. So that’s about all I can say about the whole thing.”

What has Mikel Arteta said about signing Alexander Isak?

Of course, Arsenal were recently the victims of a Isak goal which saw Arteta’s side lose 1-0 at St James’ Park.

The striker scored a brilliant header after a pin-point first-time cross from Anthony Gordon – the kind of goal Arteta’s side are missing.

After the game Arteta was pressed on whether he’d prefer to have the striker wearing Arsenal colours instead.

He responded: “I don’t know. I love my players and I wouldn’t change them for anybody else.”

Interestingly, Isak wasn’t on Edu’s five-man striker shortlist prior to leaving the club, and it’ll be interesting to see if that changes in the future.
