Viktor Gyokeres burst back into life with a fine double against Fulham and Wayne Rooney has been singing the striker’s praises.

Gyokeres hit the 20-goal mark for the season with his two goals against the Cottagers in a timely boost for Arsenal given Kai Havertz’s new injury issue.

The Swedish international has been criticised this season by many, including some fans.

However, former Man United and England man Wayne Rooney believes Gyokeres has always been good for the Gunners.

Wayne Rooney backs Viktor Gyokeres again as Arsenal beat Fulham

Gyokeres has done well this season. For all the criticism he’s had or negative comments, he has had a good debut Premier League season.

And according to Rooney, the Arsenal man has been showing it all season long.

“I’ve liked Gyokeres all season. I think he does so well for the team. He occupies defenders and I think his goal tally has been good this season,” Rooney said for BBC Sport.

“This is when you need him now, during the run-in. This is what you need when you bring a no. 9 into the club. This is when you need them most.”

Adding further comment, Rooney then suggested just how important Bukayo Saka is to the team.

“Everyone knows how good Saka is and there’s no coincidence Arsenal’s form dipped when he wasn’t in the team. It’s good to see him back playing with a smile on his face. It’s good news for England.”

Ian Wright reacts to Viktor Gyokeres’ double v Fulham

One man who does know about scoring goals in Arsenal red is Ian Wright.

Wright has commented a lot this season on Gyokeres and has often wanted him to find the net from close range, much like he did today.

Indeed, Wright commented again today, adding it’s exactly what Arsenal bought him for.

“That’s what he does. This is what we bought him for, against this type of opposition – to be in the box, in there, for a tap-in. It’s a brilliant goal.”

Clearly, Gyokeres is turning the opinion on him and if he can fire Arsenal to a trophy, then he’ll already have written his name in the history books.
