Despite being forced off at half-time due to injury, Ethan Nwaneri was one of Arsenal’s bright sparks in their disappointing draw against Brighton on Saturday evening at the Amex.
The Gunners were held by a stubborn Brighton side, with a controversial penalty awarded on the hour mark turning the game on its head.
Mikel Arteta lamented Anthony Taylor’s decision to give the spot kick, which ultimately gifted the home team a golden opportunity to draw level and cost Arsenal two points.
However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the North London outfit, with Nwaneri lighting up the south coast with a promising individual display.
The teenager latched on to Mikel Merino’s inch perfect pass, drove forward and beat Bart Verbruggen with a neat finish in the 16th minute, adding to his growing tally of goals this season.

Nwaneri sets Arsenal goal-scoring record
Bursting into the Arsenal first team this season, Nwaneri has impressed in the limited minutes he’s been granted by Arteta.
Saturday’s clash with Brighton saw him start for the second consecutive game in the league, deployed on the right-wing in Bukayo Saka’s absence.
Nwaneri broke an Arsenal record in the match, becoming the first Gunners player to score multiple Premier League goals in a season before turning 18.
However, this wasn’t the only noteworthy statistic the strike elicited, as the 17-year-old became the first Arsenal player under the age of 18 to score five or more goals in a single season across all competitions.
This feat has only been matched in the Premier League by Michael Owen for Liverpool and Wayne Rooney for Everton, and is thus a great indictment of Nwaneri’s talent and calibre as a prospect.
If the Hale End graduate can experience a similar career trajectory to this aforementioned pair of strikers, then Arsenal certainly have an exceptional player on their hands.
Arsenal should consider Gabriel Jesus on the right in Nwaneri’s absence
Speaking in his press conference on Monday afternoon, Arteta confirmed that Nwaneri will be out for a few weeks with a muscular injury.
This means that the right-hand side of Arsenal’s attack will need reconstructing once again, with talisman Saka out for several months.
Gabriel Martinelli has been trialled on the right flank, but the angles haven’t suited his head-down running style.
Instead, Arteta ought to consider utilising Gabriel Jesus on this side, with the Brazilian impressing in this role in his final season at Manchester City, producing statistics that align well with a top winger.
| Gabriel Jesus’ Premier League Statistics 2021/22 (last season at City) | |
| Appearances | 28 |
| Goals | 8 |
| Assists | 8 |
| Shots Per 90 | 3.02 |
| Successful Take-ons Per 90 | 2.2 |
| Key Passes Per 90 | 1.82 |
Completing over two successful take-ons, managing over three shots and playing 1.82 key passes per 90 minutes in this role, Jesus has a track record of being a threat as a wide man.
If Kai Havertz is deemed fit enough to start in the coming games, after missing recent matches through illness, then he ought to be deployed centrally again, allowing Jesus to shift to the right.
