Arsenal are discussing a contract extension with Kai Havertz
In Arteta’s eyes, Havertz is Arsenal’s first-choice striker, but that’s not the only way of showing the trust the boss has in his 2023 signing.
Speaking on the KS1 TV YouTube channel, journalist Steve Kay revealed what he’s hearing about a new contract for Havertz.
“Arsenal have started discussions with Kai Havertz over a new contract. Talks are currently focused on a one-year extension to the German international’s deal, currently running until 2028,” Kay said.
The transfer expert then revealed the reasoning behind the one-year extension Arsenal are plotting.
“I’ve been told it’s like done on a reward basis,” Kay explained.
“It’s not that he won’t be getting any pay rise on it. It’s just another year’s contract, which will basically be in line with all the other top players like your Saliba’s and your Magalhaes’, your Gyokeres,’ your Madueke’s.
“Eventually, obviously, Saka and Odegaard will all be around the 2029 mark, so this will be just putting him up with them, you know, so he’s on a level playing field.”
Arsenal want their key players tied down to new deals amid what is poised to be a very exciting few years for Arteta’s project.
Bukayo Saka is close to signing a new contract, and it looks like Havertz could follow with a one-year extension to match his teammates.
