Arsenal equalled one club record in the Premier League with their 5-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon. 

After a poor run of recent form, Arsenal got back to winning ways in emphatic fashion against Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium. 

Goals from Gabriel Magalhaes and Leandro Trossard, a Dean Henderson own goal, and a late Gabriel Martinelli brace ensured all three points for Mikel Arteta’s side.

This was a result and performance that the north London club desperately needed. Goals have been extremely hard to come by for Arsenal in recent weeks, which had led to the club falling to defeat in their last three matches and losing ground in the Premier League title race.

As per journalist Charles Watts, prior to this win over Crystal Palace, Arsenal had been on the verge of a full-blown crisis. 

Now, not only have Arsenal found their clinical edge in front of goal again, but they have made history in the process.

As reported by Opta, the Gunners’ 5-0 win over Crystal Palace represents the club’s joint-biggest margin of victory against a fellow London-based side in a Premier League match. The only Premier League London derby result of Arsenal’s to match this one was their 5-0 thrashing of Wimbledon in 1998.

On that day at Highbury Stadium, Tony Adams, Marc Overmars, Dennis Bergkamp, Emmanuel Petit, and Christopher Wreh provided the goals in a comprehensive result that helped the Gunners on their way to securing the Premier League title that season.

Mikel Arteta now looking to lead Arsenal to glory

Arteta will be desperately hoping that history can repeat itself to that extent this time around. Despite recent setbacks, there are good reasons to believe that Arsenal can still win the title this season. There is a long way to go yet in this campaign, and the Gunners will still have the opportunity to take points off of the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool themselves.

In the aftermath of their win yesterday, the Arsenal squad should certainly believe that they have what it takes to be crowned champions come the end of the season.

If they can continue to be this efficient in front of goal then Arteta’s side can achieve something special this season.

Silverware is all that this group of Arsenal players is missing. There is talent and depth in the squad, but actually getting over the line and securing a trophy for the first time is a major hurdle in and of itself. The Gunners now need to show that they have what it takes to overcome it.
