Arsenal have seen their chances of winning the Premier League title this season take a major hit in recent weeks.
Arsenal are in poor form. They have lost their last three matches on the spin. Two of these defeats came in the Premier League, against West Ham United and Fulham.
In fact, the Gunners have won just one of their last five top flight matches, drawing one and losing three.
This run of disappointing results has unsurprisingly damaged their standing in the table. Having been top of the tree on Christmas Day, they now find themselves in fourth-place. They are five points behind current leaders Liverpool, and level on points with Manchester City, though the reigning champions do have a game in hand.
The mood at the club is now glum. Mikel Arteta will be bemoaning his side’s struggles in front of goal, as his attacking players’ wastefulness has cost the club dearly in recent weeks. The Spanish coach is clearly taking measures to try to address this issue, as the Gunners recently tabled a bid for in-form Getafe striker Borja Mayoral.
However, Arsenal fans ought to remain optimistic that the north London club can achieve something special this season.

Why Arsenal should be optimistic that they can win the Premier League title
For a start, in any title-winning season, the eventual champions almost always have to endure a sticky patch during the campaign. Even last season, in which Manchester City swept the board and won an historic treble, Pep Guardiola’s side still went through a five-match Premier League run in which they lost twice and drew once.
Arsenal are still very much in this title race, as long as they are able to turn things around against Crystal Palace next time out and put together a run of positive results after that. However, journalist Charles Watts has admitted that it will be time to “panic” if the Gunners comes unstuck once again against the Eagles.
In general, though, the Gunners’ poor recent run is far from unprecedented even in title-winning seasons. That knowledge should give supporters plenty belief that the club can still be crowned champions come the end of this campaign.
The timing of this difficult spell is also far from disastrous. Whilst Arsenal once enjoyed a small cushion that kept them ahead of the pack, and that has now disappeared, they have not fallen so far behind Liverpool that they can’t claw the deficit back. There is still almost a full half of the campaign to go, and Arsenal will still have further opportunities to take points off of the Reds and Manchester City themselves.
