Andrea Berta has been working very hard behind the scenes at Arsenal.
The Italian replaced Edu Gaspar at the Emirates, and he has been tasked to take the Gunners to the next level through his decisions behind the scenes.
All eyes are on who Berta will sign this summer, but the new Arsenal sporting director has been working hard on player contracts as well.
The priority is the likes of Bukayo Saka and William Saliba’s deals, but it looks like the first contract Berta will extend at the Emirates is of another player.
Reports have revealed that Leandro Trossard is close to signing a new contract at Arsenal.
Arsenal fans react to Leandro Trossard contract update
Arsenal signed Trossard for just £20 million in January 2022, and the Belgian has definitely repaid that money with his performances.
However, the fact that he is 30 already has made many supporters believe that extending his contract is a bad idea.
One Arsenal fan said: “This is a mistake! Most importantly, this to me would indicate Trossard was never a stopgap because, as a stop-gap, his job is done. Filled in well, decent servant to the club but ultimately, not at the level we need to win trophies. He should be sold.”
Another wrote: “Another wrong move… Contracts are about future expectations, not past performance.”
Another Gooner posted: “I’m not sure I get the Leandro Trossard new contract stuff. Yeah, he’s probably underpaid for what his role has been. So what? That happens, but the contract is the contract. Players don’t give money back if they are paid more than their market value, do they? Not sure the club should do anything, especially if the deal runs through 2027 plus an option year.”
“If you’re going to sign a top player like Rodrygo, for example, you can’t renew contracts with current and out-of-favour ones. Doesn’t work that way anymore. This club needs to start learning how to sell/let go players, they’re obsessed with saving money,” tweeted another.
One stat explains why Mikel Arteta wants to keep Leandro Trossard
Trossard has been a very good signing for Arsenal, considering how much he cost.
Yes, he is not the superstar forward every fan wants to see, but his versatility and ability in front of goal make him a good option to have around.
Trossard’s most important trait, however, must be his availability.
No player in the last 30 years made more appearances in a single season for Arsenal than Trossard did in the 2024/25 campaign.
The Belgium international hasn’t missed a single game for the Gunners due to injury either, which is excellent considering all the problems the club has had this term.
That is probably why Arteta is keen to keep Trossard, even though he will be 31 this December.
